Twelve runners have been confirmed in the final field for Saturday’s featured 2016 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) at Royal Randwick; highlighted by the inclusion of several previous winners at the highest level of Australian racing.
Winx returned to racing for an impressive win in the Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) a fortnight ago and should prove tough to beat in the 2016 Chipping Norton Stakes from barrier 8.
Capping a standout autumn and winter preparation with a maiden win at the highest level in the Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2200m), Winx returned to racing in spring for an impressive last-gasp win in the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1300m) in September.
Continuing her slick run of form through the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m), the Street Cry mare produced a particularly impressive effort to take out the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 24th.
Hugh Bowman retains the ride on Winx, who has been charged with carrying only 57kgs in the Chipping Norton Stakes.
Trainer Chris Waller will launch a multi-pronged attack on the feature race after also including Preferment, Who Shot Thebarman, Grand Marshal and Storm The Stars in the Chipping Norton Stakes field.
Caulfield Cup winner Mongolian Khan has trialled well in the lead-up to his return and will leave from the ideal barrier 4 in the Chipping Norton Stakes with Kerrin McEvoy on board.
Winning each of the Group 1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) and Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) through a standout autumn preparation, Mongolian Khan ran a credible seventh in the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) upon resuming in spring before savaging the line for fourth in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m).
Running on late for third in the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m), the Holy Roman Emperor entire produced a huge late effort to beat a talented field of global racing stars to the line in the Caulfield Cup.
Godolphin Australia will also have several representatives in the 2016 Chipping Norton Stakes field after trainer John O’Shea accepted for Hartnell, Magic Hurricane and Hauraki.
Debuting in Australia for second in last year’s edition of the Chipping Norton Stakes, Hartnell progressed to success in each of the Group 3 Sky High Stakes (2000m) and Group 1 The BMW (2400m) before finishing fourth in the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m).
Magic Hurricane returned to the paddock after capping an impressive spring preparation with success in the Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m), and is sure to have taken plenty of benefit form a first-up run for seventh in the Apollo Stakes.
Hauraki savaged the line for third in the Apollo Stakes first-up and will also relish a step up to a mile in the 2016 Chipping Norton Stakes.
