Lasqueti Spirit Facing Big Task in 2017 Chipping Norton Stakes

February 22nd, 2017

Trainer Lee Curtis has confirmed that Group 1 winner Lasqueti Spirit will take her position in Saturday’s 2017 Chipping Norton Stakes field, but concedes that the filly probably won’t trouble Winx and Hartnell.

Lasqueti Spirit announced herself to the Australian racing fraternity via an incredible performance to win the Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) in November, but the filly was unable to match it with open company in the Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) first-up on February 13th and finished tenth; eleven lengths off Winx.

With an eye on contesting both the Group 1 The BMW (2400m) and the Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m) later in autumn, Curtis told AAP that he is not expecting the daughter of Beneteau to challenge in the Chipping Norton Stakes, but rather hit the line well.

“The Chipping Norton is another stepping stone to the BMW and the Australian Oaks,” Curtis said.

“It would be silly to say she can trouble Winx or Hartnell but if she can finish within six lengths she is going the right way.

“She’s come through the Apollo well. She had a bit of a hard run because she was a bit slow out and then was wide all the way.

“She only runs at one pace. If she had a turn of foot she would be a champion.”

Lasqueti Spirit has posted only one win through her eleven career starts so far, but has finished in the minors on a further four occasions.

Resuming in spring for sixth in the Listed The Rosebud (1200m) on August 6th, Lasqueti Spirit placed fifth in a Kembla Grange minor over 1400m and third in the Flowers & Fun Moorebank Maiden (1600m) on September 3rd.

Failing to fire upon returning to black type company and eighth in the Group 3 Gloaming Stakes (1800m), Lasqueti Spirit second in the Nepean Engineering Maiden (2000m) and fourth in the Westrac Plate (2400m) leading into her outstanding win in the Crown Oaks.

The 2017 Chipping Norton Stakes field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday.
